Non-convex costs and capital utilization: A study of production scheduling at automobile assembly plants ¬リニ

چکیده

I study detailed data from eleven automobile assembly plants. These data display considerable cross-plant heterogeneity in production scheduling. To explain the observed heterogeneity, I solve a dynamic programming model. When desired production is below the plant's minimum e$cient scale, non-convexities induce production bunching; the plant uses less than full capital utilization on average and production is more volatile than sales. When desired production is above the plant's minimum e$cient scale, the plant operates in a convex region of the cost curve. In this case, it uses high levels of capital utilization and production is less volatile than sales. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classixcation: E23; D21; L23

Non-Convex Costs and Capital Utilization: A Study of Production and Inventories at Automobile Assembly Plants

This paper studies how managers at automobile assembly plants organize production across time. Detailed data from eleven single-source automobile assembly plants display considerable cross-plant heterogeneity. At plants which make lowand medium-selling vehicles the capital stock often sits idle, production is more variable than sales, and weeklong shutdowns are often used to vary output. In con...

Assembly line performance and modeling

Automobile sector forms the backbone of manufacturing sector. Vehicle assembly line is important section in automobile plant where repetitive tasks are performed one after another at different workstations. In this thesis, a methodology is proposed to reduce cycle time and time loss due to important factors like equipment failure, shortage of inventory, absenteeism, set-up, material handling, r...

A multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) for hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with assembly operation

Scheduling for a two-stage production system is one of the most common problems in production management. In this production system, a number of products are produced and each product is assembled from a set of parts. The parts are produced in the first stage that is a fabrication stage and then they are assembled in the second stage that usually is an assembly stage. In this article, the first...

Multi-objective scheduling and assembly line balancing with resource constraint and cost uncertainty: A “box” set robust optimization

Assembly lines are flow-oriented production systems that are of great importance in the industrial production of standard, high-volume products and even more recently, they have become commonplace in producing low-volume custom products. The main goal of designers of these lines is to increase the efficiency of the system and therefore, the assembly line balancing to achieve an optimal system i...
